US President Donald Trump said that Iran should pay reparations for the damage he claimed it had caused over the past 50 years after Tehran set compensation from Washington as a clause for ending the war and opening the Strait of Hormuz.

"They asked for reparations, they asked for money for the damage that we've done. And I said, that's a good idea. Well, we're to ask for money for the damage they've done over a 50-year period. So if there's damages to be paid, I think Iran should pay those damages," Trump said at the Oval Office on Monday.

He had made similar comments on Truth Social earlier, where he stated that Iran should pay compensation for the damages it had caused in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, a likely reference to the ‘Axis of Resistance’. He had demanded that Iran paid compensation for the US military personnel killed in the conflict.

In the Oval Office, he added that the US held “100 per cent” control over the Strait of Hormuz. This comes after some Iranian leaders indicated that they would be willing to enter into peace talks if the US blockade was removed.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Real America’s Voice, Trump laid out three strategies the US has in the war, a comment that comes after he said that he was just “lowkeying” the conflict.

Under the first plan, the US will continue what it is doing now and just “bop along,” Trump said.

“Look how bad they’re doing, because they’ve got 300 per cent inflation. Their currency has almost no value,” he said.

In the second strategy, the US will hit “them really, really harder” and in the third, “just beat them economically”, Trump added.

“We control their money, what they had, which is a lot. They had a lot, and we have total control of it. I’m their banker. I am their banker,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen attacked the government-held port city of Mokha on the Red Sea coast and other areas of the country, deepening fears over threats to strategic shipping routes and a potential return to civil war. The attacks killed three. The Houthis recent strikes have killed dozens of people, as the militants have announced a blockade against Saudi Arabia.
